NERVE CONDUCTION TESTING
A Nerve Conduction Study is a test used to evaluate the function of the nerves of the human body. Nerve Conduction Studies(NCS) are used to evaluate symptoms such as paresthesias (numbness/tingling/burning), and or weakness of the arms and legs. Common conditions that are diagnosed by Nerve Conduction Studies include the following:
• Peripheral Neuropathy.
• Spinal Disc Herniation.
• Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
• Ulnar Neuropathy.
The nerve conduction study is sometimes combined with Electromyography or EMG. Electromyography (EMG) is a technique for evaluating and recording the activation signal of muscles. EMG is performed using an instrument called an electromyograph, to produce a record called an electromyogram. An electromyograph detects the electrical potential generated by muscle cells when these cells are both mechanically active and at rest.
1. What are the risks of a Nerve Conduction Study?
The test is noninvasive, but it can be a little undomfortable due to the electrical shocks. However, it is not a dangerous test due to the low amount of electrical current associated with the shocks.
2. Can the test be done if I have a pacemaker?
Yes, the pacemaker does not prevent the nerve conduction testing. You should tell your doctor if you have a pacemaker, or any other implantable device such as a spinal cord stimulator or deep brain stimulator before the procedure so that special precautions can be taken.
3. How is the EMG done?
To perform intramuscular EMG, a needle is inserted through the skin into the muscle tissue. A trained professional (most often a neurologist) observes the electrical activity while inserting the needle. The insertional activity provides valuable information about the state of the muscle and the nerve sending signals to it. Muscles at rest make certain, normal electrical “sounds” when the test is being performed. The electrical activity when the muscle is at rest is studied and compared with normal activity.
4. How is a Nerve Conduction Test helpful to my doctor?
Your doctor may order an NCS to either confirm a diagnosis or to differentiate between two possible sources of your symptoms. For example, is your pain due to your lower back condition or is your diabetes causing your symptoms? In addition to a detailed history and physical exam, Nerve Conduction Studies help your doctor in the diagnosis and management of your condition.
