Evaluation and Diagnostics

Southwest Spine and Sport in Ft. Myers ~ integrated approach with both medical physicians and chiropractors working together!

After your preliminary consultation, if our physician feels that yours is a case that we can help, the doctor will recommend a comprehensive physical examination to determine the nature of your problem.

This examination may include any of the following components:

  • Inspection - such as posture and gait analysis as well as general appearance.
  • Palpation - the doctor will examine various areas of your body using gentle pressure and touch.
  • Vitals - this will include blood pressure, pulse rate, temperature, weight, height, BMI, etc...
  • Range of motion studies - used to identify any limitations in motion of spinal segments or extremities.
  • Orthopedic evaluation - consists of simple tests used to help identify the cause of your problem.
  • Neurological examination - consists primarily of muscle tests, reflex testing and skin sensation.

Following the history and physical examination, your doctor may recommend specific diagnostic tests such as x-rays,  vascular testing, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Nerve Conduction Studies, electromyogram (EMG) and/or various laboratory studies to further assess the nature of your condition and help to insure a complete and accurate diagnosis of your problem. These tests, if necessary, will also help the doctor to develop the most effective care plan for your specific problem. Passive therapies may be administered after the exam for relief of symptoms.

Before leaving the office, you may be provided with specific instructions regarding the management of your condition while at home. This may include recommendations for the application of heat or ice, avoidance of certain activities and positions, and work restrictions. These instructions are designed to compliment your treatments in the office and will help to ensure a favorable outcome.

Our team of Doctors, Physician Assistants and Therapists, will collectively discuss your case including your health history, symptoms, reviewing X-ray films & exam findings.

Your next appointment will be scheduled within 1-2 days, depending on the severity of your condition. Our treatment recommendations will be explained to you in detail, including the nature of your condition, your treatment options, frequency of visits, expected duration of treatment, prognosis and your estimated cost of treatment.  We highly recommend that you bring your spouse or significant other and include them on this appointment.  They may have questions or concerns and the better they understand your condition and treatment, the better they can support you in any decision making.

In the event your condition requires further investigation, we will make the appropriate referral.  We have great working relationships with some of the best orthopedists, neurologists and family care practitioners in the area.  If necessary, we will personally schedule the appointment for you to ensure a prompt consultation / evaluation.
