Frequently Asked Questions
Spinal Decompression Therapy is a non-surgical therapy for the relief of back and leg pain or neck and
arm pain. During this procedure, by cycling through distraction and
relaxation phases and by proper positioning, a spinal disc can be
isolated and placed under negative pressure, causing a vacuum effect
within it. A
combination of static, intermittent, and cycling decompressive forces relieve pressure on the structures that may be causing the pain.
2. What conditions does Spinal Decompression / Disc ~ Ease treat?
Patients
with acute and chronic low back pain can benefit from Decompression
Therapy. Specifically, the system provides a program of treatments for
relief from pain for those patients suffering with lumbar and cervical
pain. The treatments are physician prescribed following specific
protocols to ensure maximum, lasting improvement.
3. I have had spinal surgery and am still suffering with pain. Is Spinal Decompression used after spinal surgery or is it contra-indicated?
Spinal Decompression Therapy following surgery is NOT CONTRA-INDICATED in most cases. It has
been used as follow-up therapy for many patients that continue to complain of
post-surgical back pain.
4. What conditions are contra-indicated for decompression therapy?
Although Spinal Decompression is an inherently safe procedure that can be used, without
complications, for a wide variety of anatomical dysfunctions of the
lumbar spine, which are commonly associated with back pain. Patients
with the following conditions should NOT be treated with decompression
therapy: Severe Osteoporosis, spondylolysis, vertebral fractures,
unstable post surgical conditions, any kind of surgical hardware. Other contraindications
are pathological lesions or congenital deformities of the vertebral
column that disrupt the integrity of the vertebral and ligamental
structures, such as fractures, neoplasm, gross osteoporosis or spina
bifida; and progressive pathological or inflammatory processes of the
spinal joints or muscles. Your best advice is to schedule a
complimentary consultation regarding your health history to best
determine if Spinal Decompression Therapy would be a treatment option for you.
5. What is the difference between Spinal Decompression Therapy and "Traction"?
Our decompression tables use progressive loading to overcome the intrinsic muscle
response. This generates intra-discal pressure, creating a vacuum effect on the spinal
disc. The system's computer controlled forces are slowly added
to reduce the guarding effect of the spinal stabilizer muscles. The
other advantage spinal decompression has over conventional traction is the ability to
create a "pumping effect" on the disc by increasing and decreasing the
load as the treatment is given.
6. Is Spinal Decompression Therapy cleared by the FDA?
Yes, the DTS has received FDA Clearance as a Class II Medical Device with 510(k) listing.
7. How does disc decompression relieve pain?
Changes
in intervertebral disc and facet joints of the cervical or lumbar spine
exert pressures on vital structures resulting in pain, muscle spasm and
inflammation. Spinal Decompression relieves pressure and factors causing pain
through precise, computer-controlled adjustments along the natural
anatomical lines of the spinal column. It does so without applying
undesirable twisting or rotational movements.
8. How much will it cost? Our office visits vary as to the extent of care needed, (Spinal Decompression sessions, spinal adjustments, spinal rehabilitation exercises, cold laser therapy, muscle stimulation, ultrasound, massage, etc.). However we promise to only do those procedures necessary for your fullest recovery. You always have the choice as to the extent of care. Our staff will review all costs, payment options and insurance coverage up front. We want to help, and believe finances shouldn't stand in the way of you and good health.
9. Will my health insurance pay for Spinal Decompression? Most health insurance plans do not cover spinal decompression. If your case is accepted, we will contact your insurance as a free service to you, to find out which services they should cover, and then let you know your estimated cost. We offer payment arrangements, including monthly payment plans.
